ARSLANTEPE & UNESCO
Arslantepe Mound, located in the Malatya plain, is a central reference site in Near Eastern archaeology, with a continuous settlement from the 6th millennium BC to the Middle Ages. The mound's monumental adobe palace complex, dating particularly to the Late Chalcolithic period, provides the earliest archaeological evidence of the state-building process, along with seal impressions documenting a hierarchical administrative structure, the emergence of central authority, and early bureaucratic practices. Following Türkiye's inclusion on the UNESCO Tentative List in 2014, conservation and management efforts, comprehensive scientific reporting, and ICOMOS technical assessments confirmed Arslantepe's "outstanding universal value" at the international level. As a result of these assessments, the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 44th World Heritage Committee meeting in 2021 for its unique data on the archaeological representation of state formation. Today, Arslantepe is a fundamental reference point in research on the history of both Anatolian and Near Eastern civilizations, as it provides an exemplary model that allows for the reconstruction of early political organization through material culture.
